Criminal Investigations Sergeant

Salary Range: $56,320.65 - $80,565.57

The City of Cayce Police Department is seeking an experienced, motivated, and community-focused law enforcement professional to serve as our next Criminal Investigations Sergeant. This supervisory position plays a vital role in leading the Criminal Investigations Division (CID), overseeing complex investigations, mentoring investigators, and ensuring the highest standards of professionalism and public service.

Position Overview:
As the Criminal Investigations Sergeant, you will provide direct supervision and leadership to investigators while assisting the Criminal Investigations Lieutenant with the daily operations of the division.

Key Responsibilities
  • Supervising and mentoring Criminal Investigations Division personnel.
  • Assigning, monitoring, and reviewing criminal investigations to ensure timely and thorough case completion.
  • Serving as the lead investigator on major or complex criminal cases.
  • Reviewing investigative reports, evidence handling, crime scene processing, and case documentation for quality and accuracy.
  • Assisting with the planning and coordination of investigative operations and tactical assignments.
  • Preparing cases for prosecution and providing testimony in court.
  • Assisting with scheduling, employee evaluations, training, and performance management.
  • Responding to citizen concerns and maintaining positive community relationships.
  • Serving in an on-call capacity during evenings, weekends, and other emergency situations.
  • Performing the duties of the Criminal Investigations Lieutenant during their absence.
  • Ensuring compliance with department policies, state laws, and professional law enforcement standards.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Associate's Degree and three (3) years of law enforcement experience, including at least one (1) year of supervisory experience; or
  • Five (5) years of law enforcement experience, including at least one (1) year of supervisory experience.
  • Valid South Carolina Driver's License.
  • South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy Class I Certification
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Experience using Microsoft Excel or similar spreadsheet software for data analysis.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Three (3) or more years of Criminal Investigations Division (CID) experience.
  • Advanced criminal investigations training and/or specialized certifications.
  • Experience supervising investigative personnel.
  • Strong leadership, organizational, and decision-making skills.


Work Environment: This position requires work in both office and field environments and involves exposure to potentially hazardous and high-risk situations. The successful candidate must be able to perform the physical requirements of law enforcement work, including responding to emergencies, investigating crime scenes, and supervising personnel during critical incidents. Evening, weekend, holiday, and on-call availability are required.
